You wake up, check Garmin Connect, and there it is: a single number judging your entire night. 68. 83. 41, if it was one of those nights. But what does that number actually measure, how does Garmin calculate it, and what score should you be aiming for?

What is Garmin's sleep score?

The sleep score is a nightly rating from 0 to 100 that summarizes how long and how well you slept. It's powered by Firstbeat Analytics, the same engine behind Body Battery and Training Status, and it's based on data your watch collects all night: heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and movement.

The score lands in one of four bands:

A quick reality check before you chase the top band: the average Garmin user scored a 71 in 2024, solidly in "Fair" territory. Only about 5% of Garmin's sleep-tracking users averaged "Excellent" scores. If you're consistently in the low 70s, you're sleeping like a typical Garmin user, not failing.

How the score is calculated

Garmin weighs two broad inputs: how long you slept, and how well you slept.

Duration is measured against age-adjusted reference standards. Adults generally need 7 to 9 hours, but the scoring model factors in your age (which is why entering your correct date of birth in Garmin Connect matters) and your recent sleep history. Consistently sleeping 6 hours drags the score down even if those 6 hours were deep and undisturbed.

Quality is where the interesting measurement happens. Garmin's Advanced Sleep Monitoring combines several signals:

  • Sleep stages. Time spent in light, deep, and REM sleep, and how they sequence through the night. Deep sleep drives physical recovery, REM supports memory and mental recovery, and the balance between them matters more than maximizing any single stage.
  • Awake time and restlessness. How often you wake up and how much you move. Frequent micro-wakeups fragment sleep even when total time in bed looks fine.
  • Overnight stress. This is the one most people miss. Your watch measures HRV throughout the night and derives a stress score from it. A night where your heart rate variability stays low, because you drank, trained hard late, or slept in a warm room, lowers your sleep score even if you never woke up once.
  • Respiration and blood oxygen. On supported devices, breathing rate and Pulse Ox data add further context, especially for spotting unusual overnight patterns.

The score appears after your watch detects your sleep window, which it does using the sleep schedule you set in Garmin Connect. That schedule also triggers do-not-disturb mode so notifications don't wake you. If your actual bedtime drifts far from the schedule you've set, detection gets less reliable, which is one of the most common reasons for a missing or short sleep record.

What's a good Garmin sleep score?

Practically: 80 or above is good, and you should treat consistent 80s as the goal rather than chasing 90s.

The "Excellent" band exists, but it's rare by design. Garmin's own data shows only 5% of users reach it on average, and scores that high usually reflect a long, uninterrupted night with strong deep and REM proportions, low overnight stress, and no alcohol in the system. Occasional 90s are a nice bonus. Building habits around getting them nightly is a recipe for orthosomnia, the anxiety about perfect sleep data that ironically wrecks sleep.

The more useful question than "is my score good" is "is my score trending." One 62 after a race weekend means nothing. Four straight weeks sliding from 78 to 68 is a signal worth acting on, and it usually shows up in Body Battery and HRV Status before you feel it in your training.

Where to find your sleep score in Garmin Connect

On the watch: open the sleep widget, or check the morning report on newer devices.

In the app: open Garmin Connect, tap the sleep card on the home screen, and you'll see the score, the stage timeline (light in blue, deep in dark blue, REM in pink, awake in gray), and the individual components. Tap into each component to see exactly what pulled the score up or down on a given night, duration, stress, interruptions, and the stage breakdown.

The same screen shows sleep insights, Garmin's personalized recommendations. If your timing was consistent, it says so. If your quality dropped despite a full night in bed, it points at the likely cause.

Why your score is low (and how to fix it)

The usual suspects, in rough order of how often they're the culprit:

  1. Alcohol. It suppresses REM, raises overnight heart rate, and spikes your stress component. A few drinks can knock 10 to 15 points off an otherwise decent night.
  2. Not enough time in bed. No algorithm rescues a 6-hour night. If duration is your limiting factor, this is a schedule problem, not a sleep quality problem.
  3. Late intense exercise. Hard sessions within two or three hours of bed keep HRV suppressed into the night.
  4. A warm or bright room. Both raise overnight stress readings.
  5. Inconsistent bedtimes. Your schedule setting and your body both prefer regularity.

How accurate is it?

Honest answer: good enough for trends, not for diagnosis. Sleep researchers estimate consumer trackers run around 60% accurate against clinical polysomnography, with deep sleep typically underestimated and REM detection the weakest link.
