Two weeks ago, we told you amazfit-solar-smartwatch-leak/">Amazfit was building a solar smartwatch. The evidence back then was code inside the Zepp app and a mystery watch on Amazfit Spain's Instagram. Strong hints, but no name.
This week changed that. Amazfit's first solar watch now has an official name, and it has been marching through regulatory databases on three continents.
The name: T-Rex Dual Solar
The big reveal came from Malaysia's SIRIM certification database, which lists model A2570 alongside the marketing name T-REX DUAL SOLAR. The type approval, code RDCX/40N/0726/S(26-4227), was granted on August 3, 2026.
That's the first time any official document has attached a real product name to the solar hardware we've been tracking.
Five databases, one watch
The A2570 has been popping up everywhere since:
- FCC (US): Filed August 11-12, confirming Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and pointing to dual-frequency GNSS. Battery capacity and solar details stay sealed
- SIRIM (Malaysia): Marketing name T-REX DUAL SOLAR, approved August 3
- Sertifikasi Indonesia: Certificate 125183/DJID/2026, listing an AMAZFIT smartwatch manufactured in China
- South Korea RRA: Verification code RC-hM6-A2570, certified August 4, with applicant Anhui Huami (Zepp Health's corporate name) and manufacturing listed in China and Vietnam
- Eurasian Economic Union registry: A fifth appearance for the same device
Five certifications across the US, Asia, and Europe is not early-stage prototyping. Hardware at this stage is usually close to production.
What "Dual" probably means
The interesting word in the name is Dual, and Amazfit's own app code may have already answered it.
When developers dug through the Zepp app in June, they found solar charging fields including watch_face_input_power and case_back_input_power. Those are solar input measurements for two separate locations: the watch face and the case back.
Put that together with the name, and the most likely read is that the T-Rex Dual Solar harvests light from two distinct areas. That would be a genuinely different approach from Garmin's Power Glass, which uses a single semitransparent layer over the display. More collection area means more charging current, and charging current is the whole game with solar watches.
There's an alternative theory floating around the comments on Gadgets & Wearables: "Dual" could refer to a dual-display design. We'd rank that well below the two-solar-zones explanation, given what the app code shows.
Why this matters
Amazfit is coming for a category Garmin has kept almost entirely to itself for years. Garmin's solar lineup, from the Instinct 2X Solar to the Fenix and Enduro solar models, commands premium prices, and nobody has seriously challenged it.
Zepp Health also looks like it planned this deliberately. During its 2026 earnings commentary, the company said it had additional T-Rex family products lined up for the second half of the year. Solar code showed up in the app weeks later. Now the certifications are landing.
The baseline here is the T-Rex Ultra 2, which packs an 870mAh battery and up to 30 days of typical use without any solar assist. If Amazfit stacks dual-area solar charging on top of that kind of endurance, the battery numbers could get silly in the best way.
What we still don't know
- Price: The T-Rex family's whole identity is premium hardware without premium pricing. Solar could push this model above the T-Rex 3, but by how much?
- Display: Our original leak analysis suggested a transflective MIP screen, since solar charging pairs best with low-power displays. Nothing in the filings confirms or rules that out
- Battery specs: The FCC filing kept battery details sealed
- Launch date: No announcement yet, but IFA 2026 in early September is the obvious stage
The Bottom Line
Two weeks ago this watch was a rumor with a code name. Now it has a name, five regulatory approvals, and a plausible launch window at IFA. The T-Rex Dual Solar looks like Amazfit's most serious attempt yet to crack the outdoor category, and the first real threat to Garmin's solar monopoly in years.
